Tetra

How can a structure surprise the user ?

Tetra is a side table constructed based on the principle of Tensigrity. Tensigrity or floating compression is a structural principle where there is a dramatic play of tension and compression. It is based on the use of isolated components in compression inside a net of continuous tension in such a way that the compressed members do not touch each other and the prestressed tensioned members position the system spatially.

Tetra is an exploration of structural properties in the most optimum way. The three inclined wooden members are connected with thin rods to support the glass top. The wooden members are not touching one another and are in compression while the rods connecting these members from the top and bottom are in tension to create a robust structure. The three central members are crafted with turned wood and finished with PU paint. The connecting members are made of thin mild steel rod and fixed to the wooden legs by screws. The toughened glass top is fixed on the structure with U. V glue. Tetra is a flatpack system which is easy to assemble with simple joinery. The optimum use of material makes it lightweight and convenient for user to move around in a living space.
