To build a culture of innovation in the organisation, there was a need for a space which could catalyse breakthrough thinking in business. The purpose of Innovation Centre in a 122 years old organisation was to create new opportunities for business across the organisation to reinvent itself and sustain for next 122 years. The space would be used for research and ideation for future businesses for Godrej.
Strategic Research
For innovations to strive and realise, it needs a distinctly different environment, strategies and processes to incubate early stage ideas. For a well established organisation which has a legacy of more than 100 years, the challenge was to understand the impact of the space with new ethos of work culture on the existing functioning of the organisation. Godrej being manufacturing company the idea was to embed the innovation process at various levels which would be integral part of the culture within the organisation for the future and drive the work culture through a space like Innovation Centre. As part of the research, several discussions and interactions were conducted with the top management. The insights from the research were used to create a comprehensive direction for the space which would be an example and epicentre of new work culture in the organisation.
Environment
The space is designed to support a process oriented approach for design thinking. It is divided into three major zones; Think, Create and Connect.
The “THINK” zone is for individual or small group of people to ideate and create a foundation for a project. The free flowing open space is supported by flexible work desks for individual and group working.
The “CREATE” zone is a restricted zone and is comprised of project rooms which can be modified according to nature of a project.
The “CONNECT” zone is comprised of a central platform connecting the pantry area, the project display area and the workshop. It can be converted into a seminar and group discussion area when required. There are multiple pockets within the space like the exhibition area and open to sky terrace for sharing knowledge and information to the community
Product
The workstation is designed to support individual and the group work. The configuration of the work desks create an ecosystem that support spontaneous conversations across the landscape of the “THINK” zone. The core of a collaborative work culture is to create a system which supports instant connect and disconnect for focus work. The directional arrangement of the work stations allow this flexibility whenever required. The movable writing boards serve the purpose of privacy and work as a surface for writing, brain storming and group discussions.
